Issue 68 is out now! August/September 2020
One rainy afternoon an inspired 15-year-old boy named John Goddard sat down at his kitchen table and wrote three words at the top of a yellow pad, “My Life List.” Under the heading he wrote down 127 goals. The list was impressive and audacious, but the results became truly incredible. Last time I looked he had completed 108 of those goals by the time he died in 2013 at the age of 88. They were not simple or easy goals. They included climbing the world’s major mountains, exploring vast waterways, reading the complete works of William Shakespeare and studying primitive cultures in Borneo. Here are a few more of John’s goals, all of which he DID achieve….
The Great Wall of China, Easter Island, Vatican City, Climb Ayers Rock, The Tower of London, The Taj Mahal, The Eiffel Tower, The Sacred Well of Chichen-Itza in Mexico, The Great Barrier Reef, Fiji Islands, Retrace travels of Marco Polo, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, The Dead Sea
Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Ararat in Turkey, Mount Kenya, The Matterhorn, Mount Fiji (Mount Everest was on John’s list but I don’t think he ever ticked it off)
Nile River, Amazon River, Congo River, Colorado River
Victoria Falls (he was chased by a warthog in the process), Yosemite Falls, Niagara Falls, An elephant, lion, rhino, cheetah, cape buffalo and whale
Lake Victoria, Lake Superior, Lake Titicaca
Dive in a submarine, Fly in a hot air balloon, ride an elephant, an ostrich and a camel, Scuba dive to 40 metres, Take a parachute jump, Learn to water ski and snow ski, Go on a church mission, Watch a cremation ceremony in Bali, Build own telescope, Write a book (he wrote one about his Nile trip), Learn French, Spanish and Arabic, Milk a poisonous snake, Visit a movie studio, Become a member of the Explorers’ Club and the Adventurers’ Club, Travel through the Grand Canyon by foot and by boat, Marry and have children, Visit the birthplace of both grandfathers (Denmark and England)
Quite a list for a 15-year-old to compile and this extract is only the half of it. A few other things on John’s “life bucket list” which he never quite ticked off were: Visit the moon, Travel to the North and South Poles, Visit every country in the world, Appear in a Tarzan movie!
He became known as the “World’s Greatest Goal Achiever” and was an inspiration to adventurers the world over. So, yeah, most of you reading this are definitely waaay past the age that John Goddard was when he decided he wanted to do all of these things but hey, it’s never too late to start a somewhat abbreviated list of your own.
Visit a(nother) game lodge (massive savings for South Africans), walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela, take a solo roadtrip to see something you’ve always wanted to see within your own country, go to Mauritius (soon), do an advanced driving course, get back into post-lockdown shape on a wellness break, or go and stay at one of the many fabulous accommodation establishments we have featured in this issue. Whilst we’re still only able to travel intra-provincially (at the time of writing this), now’s the perfect time to explore your own back-yard.
Take a look inside… and travel safely.
