Mistletoe and wine

A time to rejoice in the good that we see.”
Yes, it’s Christmas time. Well, only a few weeks left to go. If you have not as yet found “gees” this holiday season, we might just have the answer for you. While South Africa does not really do mistletoes or cosy fires next to the Christmas tree – we do gifts and braais, songs and wine. And whether you are planning a Christmas getaway or staying at home, our local Christmas markets are bound to bring you some festive cheer. Here are a few markets near you that are worth venturing out to over the next few weekends, or even weeknights.
The Garden of Lights
From 30 November to 1 January you have to make time to visit the Garden of Lights at the Emperors Palace. This celebration of Christmas brings a winter wonderland with lights and festivities around every corner. There is something for everyone, and the whole family can join in on the fun. Set in the D’oreale Grande Hotel’s gardens, you will find funfairs, food stalls, Christmas crafters fairs and Santa himself. Visit between 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm (depending on the weather). Entrance fee is R25 per person, or you could opt for a Festive Family Package at R100 for five. Proceeds go to charity.
Bryanston Organic Moonlight Markets
Over the Christmas season, this regular market brightens up with festive cheer. Stalls are set up to showcase only the finest – from hand-crafted gifts to great artworks. With stylish clothes and accessories, you could also shop for your next Christmas party. And as with all good festive markets, you can enjoy live entertainment while enjoying sweet and savoury temptations. Also, don’t miss the children’s theatre from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm each evening. The Moonlight Christmas Markets run Tuesday evenings from 20 November to 18 December, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Cape Town has so many markets to choose from. It really depends on which one is closest to you. Quite a few big ones have passed already, running from October to early November, but here are a few you should not miss.
Simply South Craft and Gift Fair
This indoor Gift and Craft Fair is filled with handpicked products that will offer you gifts with a difference. Located on the premises of the NG Kerk in Bergvliet, here you will find over 200 crafters gathered from all over the Peninsula. There is no entrance fee and plenty of parking! As with all fairs, you will find food, handmade gifts, sweet things, Christmas Cakes and a special, unique range of handmade cutlery. To rest your feet, simply make your way to the tea room and enjoy some light snacks. This fair runs from the 3rd of December to the 22nd of December 2018, Monday to Friday 10:00 am – 8:00 pm. And Saturdays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Made in the Cape Festive Fair
The popular “Made in the Cape Market” has a special Festive Fair. The fair will run from the 30th of November to the 16th of December. With exhibitors changing every 3 to 4 days, you are sure to find variety and a reason to return. And of course, a Festive Fair would not be the same without a food market. From homemade gifts to home decor, jewellery, Christmas decorations – you are sure to find something you’ll love. Find the market on all 3 levels of Cavendish Square, Southern Suburbs.
I Heart Market
While the I Heart Market is not a Christmas Market only, it is definitely a place to find your Christmas cheer. The market takes place every first Saturday of the month between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm under the arches of the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium. In December, you can visit this market for 4 Saturdays in a row, to make sure you get your Christmas shopping done. The market is all about a community of makers – a platform to showcase local craft, design, fashion and food.
So, if you haven’t discovered a market near you, you may not need to look far. Take a moment, make the time, and you might just find your shining star…
