When executives from Food Network in the UK began conducting interviews for a new South African TV series, they knew that they were in for a challenge.
But when Siba Mtongana walked into One&Only Cape Town, they knew that they had found their next star.
“When we first met Siba, we’d been looking very hard to find somebody and were very pleased to find her,” says Nick Thorogood, Senior Vice President of Content and Marketing (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) at Scripps Networks Interactive, a media company with lifestyle brands including Cooking Channel, Food Network, Travel Channel, and more. “We wanted to respect the fact that she was going to be having another baby and we needed to focus on that too. And that’s why the format [of the latest series] is slightly different.”
Entitled Siba’s Table Fast Feasts, it’s all about making food simple so that people don’t feel intimidated to cook. Instead of having big parties, the five-part series focuses on delivering food quickly and easily, with clever cheats and shortcuts along the way. And with episode titles like Weekday Wonderful, Speedy Sunday, and Brisk Braai, it’s all part of Siba’s diverse love for food.
“I cook a lot I always have,” she says. “It’s never the same thing. For two months, I’ll have a favourite dish. And the next two months, I’ll have another favourite dish. But I love Asian food. Treat me with anything Asian and I’m good!”
