South African drivers` licences are recognised in SADC countries (Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe). It is recommended that a letter of verification be obtained from the South African Department of Transport.
Plugs: 220/240 volts AC, 50Hz. South African-style three-pin (round) plugs are used in the capital and most tourist areas.
Drinking Water: All water should be regarded as being potentially contaminated. Milk is unpasteurised.
Health: Medical facilities are very limited. It is advisable to carry basic medical supplies. Comprehensive health insurance is recommended and it should include emergency air evacuation coverage.
Local Offences / Laws: Taking photographs of soldiers and public buildings (including bridges, airports and government buildings) is prohibited by law. Identity documents should be carried at all times.
Travel Tips / Warnings: Credit cards are accepted in Maputo, but outside of the capital city cash should be used. Travellers should note that it is risky to depart from roads and paths, as there may be unexploded landmines outside the main cities.
Duty Free: The following goods may be imported into Mozambique without incurring customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco
• 750ml of spirits
• A reasonable quantity of perfume (opened)
Prohibited Items: Narcotics and unauthorised firearms.
