Something magical happens when you combine a weekend away, a
group of women, a luxury lodge in the middle of the bush and a spattering of bucket-list items.
There seems to be little time left in our busy working lives to plan a weekend away with your girls, but that is the exact reason why we should all be making time.
If the thought of a bush break conjures up ideas of rustic cabins, spiders lurking in dusty corners and running to an outhouse in the middle of the night, then you need to think again. This ladies’ weekend away combines fine dining, luxury lodges, spa treatments, photo shoots (complete with a
The hardest part of planning a trip like this is finding a date that works for you all. Once the hard part is done, all you have to do it sit back, relax, and choose from the tempting “pick-n-mix” selection of optional extras. It is important to strike the perfect balance between planning certain activities and planning nothing at all!
Finding the time to just sit and catch up with your girlfriends, without the constant vibrations of messages and phone calls is one of modern life’s
There are certain things in life that are good for the soul: sunshine, laughter, travel, water, fire. But there is one thing that we all have in common, and that is that spending time with the ones who know you best, who are there for you through thick and thin and who’ll make you laugh until it hurts, will leave you feeling energised and ready to take on the world once again.
Five lucky ladies recently found the time to plan their 4-night break at Fort Governor’s Estate in the heart of the Eastern Cape. Situated mid-way between Port Elizabeth and East London, just outside Grahamstown, the stylish Uniondale Lodge (one of four properties on the estate), provides home-away-from-home comforts making it the ideal getaway for a group of friends or family.
Following a private transfer from East London to the Lodge (just under 2 hours in total), the ladies were welcomed by the hospitality team from Fort Governor’s as well as the photographers who would be capturing their entire weekend in film and photos.
The first night on tour is always a memorable one, and when coupled with good food, fabulous local wines and even better company, it’s the sure fire way to kick-start an unforgettable weekend.
Waking up at sunrise in the middle of the bush and stepping out onto your own private deck overlooking game browsing in the reserve below is food for the soul. Couple this with a mug of steaming coffee and freshly baked rusks and you’d be forgiven for pinching yourself to make sure you weren’t still dreaming.
It is easy to forget the free-spirited girl within because she can often get lost in the scheduling and the hustle and bustle of city life, buried beneath work schedules and maturity. That girl is still there. Spending time with old friends in a setting like this brings her out of hiding and parades her around for a bit – what’s not to love.
Who knows, she may even find herself stripping off and running into the pool for the best wake-up call she can imagine – washing the responsibility of daily life straight off her shoulders and watching them evaporate with the rising sun.
Food for the soul goes even better when fused with food for the body. So after a freshly prepared breakfast followed by a mouth-watering lunch, the ladies were treated to a skin care demonstration complete with goodie
What good is a girl’s weekend away without clothes that sparkle and shine and make you feel a million dollars? The stylist rail is just like having your girlfriends’ wardrobes within easy reach, where you can mix and match to your heart’s content, skin care giggling and having fun with each other.
No game drive is complete without one of Africa’s most unique experiences – a sundowner stop. Locally crafted Black Mountain Gin, combined with Chinchona pink-grapefruit tonic served at your own private bar takes sundowners in the bush to another level.
Mixing your own drinks to match the ever-changing, dusky-pink palette of the sunset whilst having portraits of you and your girlfriends captured on film is something every girl should add to their bucket list – and then tick off ASAP!
With the last rays of the sun disappearing and with a sun-kissed glow on their faces, the girls headed back to the lodge for another relaxing evening next to the fire.
Saturday morning dawned with the tempting aroma of steaming coffee and fresh muffins. You could feel the excited anticipation building as the girls were pampered and preened, getting ready for their photo shoot in the bush. A brand new
The perfect palette for photos shot against a backdrop of azure skies and emerald bush. Memories were captured in abundance, with each photographer capturing their own unique images of each person.
Back at the lodge, the unexpected surprise of a pink champagne tasting by the pool was the icing on the cake. Laughter and joy could be heard for miles around as the ladies whiled away their evening, dressed in their finery and sipping on
After an indulgent few days, Sunday was a day of rejuvenation and relaxation. The day began with poolside Yoga under moody African skies.
“It is really difficult to single out one specific moment as it was all so amazing. But if I really had to pick one, it would have to be the yoga session by the pool with those incredible views”
The girls were treated to massages overlooking the reserve, a pool-party themed lunch and
Restored and rejuvenated, armed with memories to last a lifetime (and sore abs from laughing so much after a whirlwind women’s weekend) these five ladies are firmly convinced that a trip to Fort Governor’s Estate should be right at the top of the “must-do” list for every close group of friends.
