“Live life with no excuses, travel with no regret” – Oscar Wilde
We recently asked our Travel Ideas readers for their reasons why they take holidays and travel. It is only once you understand why you take holidays and travel, that you will better understand what is to be gained from your travel experiences.
Here are the top 4 major reasons why our Travel Ideas readers take holidays and travel:
1. Timeout with a loved one
The majority of our audience listed this as their main reason for travelling – to take time out of their busy schedules and to connect and spend time with their loved ones!
If your loved-ones’ love language is spending quality time together, then travelling is the perfect way to express you care. To make your family, friends or partners feel extra loved – find out what they are interested in and add a few sights and activities to your travel bucket list. In the process, you will gain new experiences, explore new places and make beautiful memories. It will also give you the opportunity to learn about things you probably would not be exposed to otherwise. The great part about travel is that you leave everyday life behind and get a chance to let go of all pretense and to have fun with your travel partner.
2. Stress Relief
Not surprisingly, today’s modern lifestyle places such stress on our lives that many confirmed that travelling or taking a holiday was for the sake of stress relief.
If planned well, travel experiences can help you relax. When you do things you love and enjoy, it helps you forget about your daily worries. New experiences have a way of reminding you of who you wanted to be, what you wanted to achieve in life and what you dreamed of. Whether your idea of relaxing is spending time on the beach, on the water in a speedboat or catching up on history in a museum…it could just well be what the doctor ordered.
3. A break from routine
There is nothing worse than getting stuck in a rut and the third top reason for travelling was to break day-to-day routines.
While you may love your work, doing the same thing every day can become…mundane. Travelling takes you away from routine and forces you out of your comfort zone. If you give travel a chance, you get to try new foods, wake up earlier or stay up later, sleep in or sleep on a train…or perhaps try to sleep on a plane. See the world from above or below. Step away from what you are used to and break away from boring.
4. Explore new places and cultures
The fourth main reason for travel was to seek adventure. To explore new places and cultures.
If you spend weekends with friends or family, you probably go to the usual places, have a braai or share a drink. Venturing beyond your usual means you can discover new places and learn about different cultures. Learning new languages and understanding different cultures not only enrich you as a person but stirs up self-reflection.
