Three passionate locals from Durbs, Cape Town & Jozi tell us why their cities are the best.
Name and Occupation: Jamie van Schoor, Managing Director at Terramin.
You know I’m from Johannesburg because… I understand the unwritten law of speed on the N1 highway which reads… slow, fast and very fast from left to right!
Favourite Local Activity: Mountain-biking through the Spruit and Delta Park with a breakfast stop at The Whippet in Linden, after checking out sunrise over the city from the Northcliff Reservoir.
Fun Fact about your City: Johannesburg is the world’s biggest man-made forest, with over 10 million trees.
Cape Town Local
Name and Occupation: Keith Edwards, Rail Tourism Marketing and Communication for Metrorail & part-time travel blogger (D7Events).
You know I’m Capetonian because…the Cape spirit lives within me…
Favourite Local Activity: There are so many! I love the City Sightseeing bus, as you can see so much of our beautiful city in one day. Stopping at Table Mountain, enjoying a sunset and being surrounded by adventurous people make for an amazing experience.
I also love meandering between Stellenbosch’s various wine farms and exploring the central city’s restaurants and theatres. I enjoy travelling by train and listening to people share intimate details of life. I’m often so intrigued by what I hear that I can’t wait to share it with my family and have a good laugh! I love Cape Town’s people and cultural differences – I find Trevor Noah’s way of representing coloured people living in Cape Town especially funny.
Lastly, I am an adrenaline junkie, so I’m always on the lookout for action. We have plenty of that in the Cape: Ratanga Junction, Elgin’s Cape Canopy Tours, Mother City Skydiving… to mention a few.
Fun Fact about Cape Town: The Mother City offers many fantastic free activities such as walks on the beach and hiking in the mountains.
Name and Occupation: Alicia Pillay, Candidate Attorney.
You know I’m from Durbs because… I’m free-spirited and always smiling.
Favourite Local Activity: Taking long relaxing walks on the Durban beachfront promenade.
Fun Fact about your City: You can enjoy our beautiful, sun-kissed beaches year round.
